Tyson Graduation

Judge Tyson's education was grounded in the traditions and values of North Carolina. Throughout his childhood, Judge Tyson worked on his family farm, attended Grays Creek High School, and graduated from Terry Sanford Senior High School in 1971.

Judge Tyson's next academic achievements were realized when he attended the University of North Carolina at Wilmington where he was placed on the Dean's List and graduated with a B.A. degree in English and Secondary Education in 1974. In 1976, Judge Tyson was accepted into the Charter Class of the Campbell Law School where he graduated cum laude in 1979. During his years at Campbell, he served as a Residence Hall Parent, aided the faculty as a research assistant, participated as a member of the Wagner National Moot Court Team, and worked as Articles Editor of the Campbell Law Review where he published an article in the first issue. Judge Tyson achieved acclaim at the law school and was named to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities, chosen as a member of the Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Fraternity, and named as the first receipt of the Advocacy Award given by the International Academy of Trial Lawyers.

In 1988, Judge Tyson received his Masters in Business Administration from Duke University, Fuqua School of Business. He has also attended a seminar for appellate judges at New York University School of Law in the summer of 2001

In May of 2004, Judge Tyson was awarded a Master of Law in the Judicial Process (LL.M.) during graduation ceremonies at the University of Virginia School Law. Judge Tyson earned his degree over a two-year period, including residence for class during the summers of 2003 and 2002 while Court was in recess, and completing an extensive thesis reviewing North Carolina native and President James K. Polk's nominations to the United States Supreme Court.

Judge Tyson is one of the four current Judges in North Carolina to earn the Masters of Law Degree from the University of Virginia. Selected from more than 100 judicial applicants, Judge Tyson graduated with twenty-eight fellow federal and state judges from seventeen states. "This program provides in-depth training to enable me to better serve North Carolina citizens as an appellate judge. I am honored have been selected, and to have made life long friendships with fellow judges from across the United States," stated Judge Tyson.

He is the only judge in North Carolina who is a Board Certified Specialist in Real Property Law by the North Carolina State Bar.
